About Me
I am an art and dress historian, author, editor and artist with a PhD in Art History and Visual Culture.
I am the author of three books published by Bloomsbury Visual Arts: The Dress Detective: A Practical Guide to Object-based Research (2015), Reading Fashion in Art (2020) and Dressing & Undressing Duchamp (2022). I also have an extensive list of other scholarly publications, including catalogue essays and book chapters.
I have worked as a curator and collection manager and am responsible for the revival of the Fashion Research Collection at Toronto Metropolitan University. In my role as The Dress Detective, I have acted as a consultant to museums and private collectors in helping date and interpret photographs, artworks and dress artifacts. For example, I helped to date the Art Gallery of Ontario's Portrait of a Lady with an Orange Blossom acquired by the museum in 2020. I have lectured in universities and museums in North America, Europe, and the United Kingdom.
I currently hold the post as the Editor-in-Chief of Dress: The Journal of the Costume Society of America. I previously held the positions as Associate Editor (Exhibition Reviews) of Dress 2021-2022, Editor of The Journal of Dress History 2019-2021, and Guest Editor of The Costume Journal in 2012-2013. I also have done freelance editorial work.
I hold committee and board appointments at various museums, including The Art Gallery of Ontario and The Textile Museum of Canada. In my spare time, I like to draw pet portraits, especially Frenchies.
